Agricultural Engineering:

Mechanization of agriculture is an essential input to the modern agriculture. It enhances productivity, besides reducing human drudgery and cost of cultivation. Mechanization also helps in improving utilization efficiencies of other inputs. As compared to some of the neighbouring states, pace of mechanization of agriculture in Madhya Pradesh is not to the desired level. To achieve this objective, Directorate of Agricultural Engineering was established during the year 1989, with a modest staff of 1709, which has been reduced to 1270 after formation of Chhattisgarh State.

The main thrust of Directorate, has been to help the farmers to raise the farm productivity through custom hiring of machines and introduction of improved farm machinery and equipments.

Objectives

(A)       Offer Custom Hiring Services.

(B)       Popularization of Improved Agricultural Implements and Machinery, Through Demonstrations in Farmers' Fields.

(C)      Subsidy Programme of Tractors, Power Tillers and Improved      Agricultural Implements.

(D)      Quality Check of Sprinkler and Drip Irrigation System being       distributed to the Farmers.

(E)      Developing of Prototype of New Agricultural Implements andtheir       Manufacture in Departmental Workshops.

(F)      Training to Village Artisans on Manufacturing of Agricultural         Implements.

(A) Offer Custom Hiring Services: -

Machines are hired to the farmers, and other institutions for following activities;

(1) Deep Ploughing.

Deep ploughing and turning the soils during summers helps in restoring the fertility of soils besides eradicating the harmful weeds, bacterias and nematodes etc. present in the soil. Such ploughing is done by tractors with Mould Board ploughs. The Directorate owns a fleet of 37 chain type tractors with heavy duty Mold Board ploughs.

It is worth mentioning that these machines are available only with this Directotare. These machines carry out deep ploughing during hot dry summer conditions upto a depth of 12" to 14". Machines are hired to the farmers at the rates approved by State Government .Now bank loan is also available for this activity.

(2) Land Leveling.

Directorate owns a fleet of 76bulldozers,which are hired to the farmers on custom basis at the rates approved by the State Government for levelling, bunding terracing of agricultural lands. These machines are also hired for construction of water harvesting structures. Machines are also hired to government and semi-government agencies, private firms etc.for non-agricultural purposes at rates, which are higher than rates prescribed for agricultural purposes. Facility of bank loan is available for this activity.

3) Light cultivation and other Farm Operations.

Directorate owns a fleet of 135 wheel tractors with following equipments for light cultivation and other agricultural operations;

*           Zero Till Seed-Cum-Ferti.Drill

*           Paddy Transplanter

*           Inclined Plate Planters

*           Reapers

*           Threshers

*           Power Tillers etc.

These machine are hired to the farmers on custom basis at the rates prescribed by the Government for completion of different farm operations in a short duration. Rotavator is an equipment, which helps in preparation of seedbed after Kharif crops, like soybean and paddy etc in one go. Thus it helps in conserving the residual moisture available in soil and reduces the cost of cultivation. Due to the efforts of this Directorate this equipment has become immensely popular in the State and now nearly 500 farmers own this machine.









(4) Yield Testing and flushing of bores.

Directorate owns a fleet of 33 Air-compressors, with maching accessories. These machines are hired to the farmers for yield testing of tubewells and cleaning/flushing of existing tubewells. These machines are also used for deepening of wells through blasting.

The above activities are being carried out through a fleet of 597 different machines located in 26 tractor units in different district. Details of these machines along with their location may be viewed in Annexure-1.Prevailing hiring rates may be viewed in Annexure-2

(B) Popularization of Improved Agricultural Implements through Demonstrations.

Under Central Sector Scheme of 'Demonstration of Newly Developed Agricultural Equipment Including Horticultural Equipments at farmers fields', newly developed agricultural/horticultural equipments and machinery are procured and their demonstrations are carried out at farmerts'fields .The effect of these demonstrations has been very positive, with the result farmers have now started opting for improved farm machines like; rotavators, seed-cum-ferti.drills, paddy transplaners, garlic planters, weeders,straw reapers, threshers and mini-rice mill etc.

1. Subsidy on Small Tractors: -

Under Centrally Sponsored Macro-Management Scheme in which sharing pattern between Union Government and State Government is in the ratio of 90:10,all category of farmers are eligible foe subsidy on purchase of small tractors upto 35 P.T.O. Horsepower upto Rs.30, 000/- subject to maximum of 25% of the cost Since availability of tractors in Madhya Pradesh is comparatively low, farmers are coming forward in large number to avail the benefit of this programme .The programme is tied with institutional credit.

2. Subsidy on Power Tillers : - Power tiller is a small tractor which can be used as a prime mower for operating different farm machines like rotavator, seed drill etc in small fields, gardens and orchards. This is a very useful equipment for small farmers who cannot afford a tractor .On purchase of power tiller, subsidy upto Rs.30, 000/- subject to maximum of 25% of the cost is admissible to all category of farmers .The scheme is gradually picking up in rice growing areas and in areas where farmers have orchards. 3. Subsidy on Improved Agricultural Implements text- Under Centrally Sponsored Macro-Management Scheme, subsidy upto 25 % of the cost on improved bullock drawn and power operated implements and farm machines is admissible to all category of farmers. Under this programme, nearly 1.50 lakh bullock drawn and hand operated improved agricultural equipments arebeing distributed to the farmers of the State annualy, with the result we have been able to reduce human drudgery and enhancing production and productivity besides reducing the cost of cultivation. The State is proud to be at the top in distribution ofimproved agricultural equipments in the country. Some of the improved agricultural implements, which are included in the subsidy programme, are;

(D) Quality check of Sprinkler and Drip Irrigation systems:

Under departmental schemes, sprinkler and drip irrigation systems are being procured bythe farmers against subsidy. Field officers posted under this Directorate carry out field inspections and ensure that equipments supplied are of prescribed standards and confirm to BIS specifications. In case ofsub-standard supplies, the action is taken against the suppliers.

(E) Developing Prototypes and Manufacturing of Improved

Agricultural Implements: -

Under this Directorate, there are 4 major and 4 minor workshops,located at following places;

In these workshops, besides repairing of departmental machinery,the prototypes of improved agricultural implements, suitable for particular region is undertaken. Besides this activity, the manufacturing of improved bullock drawn and hand operated agricultural implements is also undertaken. These implements are provided to the farmers against subsidy programme.

(F) Training to Village Artisans on manufacturing of agricultural implements: -

In order to upgrade the skill of village artisans on manufacture of agricultural implements by applying the modern techniques, a training programme is being run by the Directorate at Jabalpur in coordination with Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur.So far 80 village artisans have been trained under the programme.

Power Operated Special Equipment like Zero-Till-Seed-Cum-Ferti.Drill, Seed Grader, Rotavator, Sugarcane Cutter Planter, Tractor Operated Front Mounted Reaper, Straw Reaper, Mini Rice Mill, Maize Sheller etc.	- Rs.30, 000/- or 25% of the cost, whichever is less.
Self Propelled Machines like Paddy Transplanter, Self Propelled Reaper etc.	- Rs.50, 000/- or 25% of the cost, whichever is less.

N.B. 1. Farmers may approach to the Deputy Director Agriculture of

concerned district to avail the benefit of the subsidy on tractors, power tillers and implements.

2. For obtaining the services of bulldozers,ploughing tractors and other

machines, farmers are advised to contact Mechanical Assistant of tractors unit shown in Annexure-I or Assistant Agricultural Engineer of their area.
